Vancouver Photographer Jane Thomson Wins Third Prize in The International Dog Photography Awards® 2023

Vancouver-based photographer Jane Thomson has been awarded third place in the prestigious International Dog Photography Awards® 2023 competition.

Jane’s striking photograph, titled "Timber's Tribute," won third prize in the highly competitive Dogs & People category, which celebrates the profound bond between dogs and their humans.

The International Dog Photography Awards attracts top talent from around the world, showcasing the most exceptional and evocative dog photographs. The awards have garnered international attention, with coverage in leading publications such as The Guardian, The Telegraph, Bored Panda, and My Modern Met.

About the Winning Photograph: "Timber's Tribute"

"Timber's Tribute" is a powerful and evocative portrait that perfectly captures the deep connection between a woman and her beloved dog. The photograph features Katie, a woman with striking tattoos and a somber expression, standing behind Timber, her toy Australian Shepherd.

Timber, with his fluffy white and brown fur, sits gracefully on a wooden table, gazing directly into the camera with soulful eyes. The contrast between Katie’s strong, inked arms and Timber’s soft, gentle demeanor creates a compelling visual narrative.

The image is not only beautifully composed but also emotionally charged, showcasing the bond that Katie and Timber shared during their time together. Timber, who was diagnosed with a form of non-regenerative anemia at the age of six, was the heart and soul of Katie’s life.

Despite his illness, Timber’s spirit remained unbroken, and his love for Katie shone through in every moment they spent together. Tragically, Timber passed away the day after this portrait was taken, making the photograph an even more poignant tribute to his memory.

Why "Timber's Tribute" Stood Out

The judges of the International Dog Photography Awards® were moved by the emotional depth and technical excellence of "Timber's Tribute." The photograph beautifully encapsulates the purpose of the Dogs & People category, which seeks to capture the unique moments of connection and emotion between dogs and their humans.

"Timber's Tribute" stood out for its raw, unfiltered portrayal of love, loss, and the enduring bond between a dog and his owner. The image is a testament to the powerful impact that dogs have on our lives, and it resonates with viewers on a deeply emotional level.
