How to Make Your Family Portrait Photography Session Stress-Free
Family portrait sessions are a wonderful way to capture special moments and create memories that will last a lifetime. But let's be honest—getting everyone ready and into the perfect pose can sometimes feel a little overwhelming…especially with children and dogs involved!
The good news? It doesn’t have to be! With a bit of preparation and the right mindset, you can make your family portrait session stress-free and even fun. Here’s how to relax, enjoy the process, and ensure great results.
Plan Ahead
One of the best ways to reduce stress is to plan ahead. We start by choosing a date that works best for you and your family.
Next, think about what everyone will wear. Coordinating your outfits can make a big difference in how your photos turn out. I am always here to help with this. If you would like my input in helping to choose your family’s wardrobe, I will create a personalized mood board for you with ideas and notes about clothing choices I feel would be appropriate for your session.
I then recommend that you lay out all the outfits you are considering wearing (along with a few options) on a bed and photograph them. You will then share these with me no later than a few days before our session together. I will guide you through this process, it can be the most challenging part in planning a portrait session.
Keep Expectations Realistic
It’s natural to want everything to go perfectly, but remember that life with kids and dogs is full of surprises. It’s okay if things don’t go exactly as planned—some of the best photos come from those candid, unplanned moments.
Instead of stressing about getting the "perfect" shot, focus on your own genuine interactions and emotions. If your little one decides to pull a funny face or your dog gets distracted by a noise in the studio, embrace it! These moments add personality to your photos and make them truly unique. And we photographers can do wonders with editing these days!
Involve the Kids
Make the session fun for your children by involving them in the process. Let them help pick out their outfits, or bring along a favourite toy. Kids who feel included and excited about the session are more likely have fun.
Stay Relaxed and Positive
Your mood sets the tone for the entire session, so do your best to stay calm and positive. If you’re feeling anxious or rushed, your kids (and even your pets) will pick up on it. Take deep breaths, smile, and remember that this is about celebrating your family and having fun together. We’re making memories here!
If something doesn’t go according to plan, laugh it off and go with the flow. I am experienced in handling all sorts of situations and will guide you through your session - we always have a good time!
Bring (Non-Messy) Snacks
Sometimes a little snack can go a long way in keeping everyone happy. Bring along some easy, mess-free, non-staining snacks for your kids to enjoy if they start to get hungry. A quick snack break can help reset their mood and keep energy levels up.
Here’s a list of mess-free snack ideas for keeping everyone happy during a family portrait session:
1. String cheese
2. Apple slices
3. Grapes (seedless and pre-washed)
4. Baby carrots
5. Cucumber slices
6. Rice cakes
7. Pretzel sticks
8. Mini crackers
9. Dry cereal (like Cheerios or puffed rice)
10. Plain popcorn
Trust Your Photographer
I know how to position you, which angles work best, and how to get the most natural expressions from everyone. Follow my lead and let me guide you through the session.
If you have specific ideas or must-have shot, share them with me beforehand. This way, I can ensure you get the images you’re hoping for!
Enjoy the Experience
Most importantly, enjoy the experience! A family portrait session is a time to connect, laugh, and make memories together. When you’re having fun and enjoying each other’s company, it shows in the photos. The more relaxed and natural you feel, the more authentic and meaningful your portraits will be.
Remember, the goal of your family portrait session is to capture the love and connection that makes your family unique. By staying calm, embracing the unexpected, and focusing on the joy of being together, you’ll not only get great photos but also create a positive and memorable experience for everyone involved.
